The phenomenon may be called a “polar vortex,” but last week’s mass of Arctic-born frigid air reached southward to (and beyond) Dundalk, making its bone-chilling effects felt across the area. Among the visible consequences:  blue herons walking not in, but on, a frozen Bear Creek (left); ice forming around pier pilings and along shorelines (left); and the “instant snow” trick at the Eagle office, featuring layout staffer Nick Konstantopoulos (top) tossing a cup of hot water into the air, to see the cold turn it immediately into fluffy white stuff.
