Owners teach the art of eating Maryland crabs

by Sara Blumberg

Costas Inn co-owners Nick and Pete Triantafilos gave viewers a crash course on how to eat crabs as the featured cooks on NBC’s Today show.

The two cooks appeared on the national news show on Aug. 16 as part of the “Favorite Things” segment hosted by Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford.

The segment was also a birthday surprise for Gifford, who has been ordering crabs from the restaurant for the last decade.

Gifford grew up in Bowie and attended Bowie High School.

According to the Costas Inn blog, when Gifford stays in her Delaware home, she will order crabs from the restaurant.

The segment revealed that Gifford loved all things seafood – especially steamed crabs – and of course, National Bohemian Beer.

During the segment, the Triantafilos brothers broke down how to properly eat a crab for Hoda, who was new to crab eating.

Costas Inn presented crabs to Gifford on the last appearance as co-host of Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, the syndicated daytime talk show she co-hosted with Regis Philbin for 15 years.

Family-owned since 1971, the restaurant offers crabs year-round for customers.

Before leaving to do the television spot, the brothers  had to prepare four dozen crabs, three dozen crab cakes and a dozen 1.5 pounds of lobsters for the trip, according to the Costas blog.

Since 1999, the establishment has been Zagat rated and has won titles for “Best Crabs” and “Best Pit Beef” from both Baltimore Magazine and The Daily Record. Costas has also won multiple Eagle awards.
