Steve Matrazzo, editor of The Dundalk Eagle, has been named the winner of a Sigma Delta Chi award for column writing, the Society of Professional Journalists [SPJ] announced on Tuesday.

The Sigma Delta Chi awards are presented annually for excellence in print, broadcast and online journalism by the SPJ, a 103-year-old professional organization with more than 9,000 members nationwide. First given in 1939, they are regarded as among the most prestigious awards in American journalism. The awards announced on Tuesday are for work produced in 2012.

Matrazzo was the winner in the category of general column writing for newspapers with daily circulation of up to 100,000 and non-daily publications. The category covers over 1,200 of the more than 1,300 daily newspapers in the U.S. as well as all of the over 6,200 non-dailies. He was honored for columns published in 2012 offering commentary on economic issues, criticizing government secrecy and defending facts in the face of falsehoods.

The award is especially noteworthy because available records note only five previous instances in which a non-daily newspaper has won a Sigma Delta Chi award in a category that includes daily publications.
"It's a huge honor," Matrazzo said in reaction to the award, "and it's especially gratifying that a distinguished panel of journalists chose to give this kind of recognition to a community weekly. This award is a big thing for me personally, of course, but it's also an important affirmation for The Eagle, and for the many community papers that aspire to provide quality journalism to their readers."

Deborah Cornely, The Eagle's publisher, said, "We are thrilled for Steve. The Eagle is fortunate to have an editor of his caliber.  His columns are always well-informed, well-reasoned and well-written. I learn a lot from them and enjoy reading them even when I disagree with his point of view.  We are heartily celebrating his achievement and looking forward to reading more of his work."

Matrazzo has previously won awards from the National Newspaper Association, the Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Press Association and the Maryland chapter of the SPJ. He and the other Sigma Delta Chi honorees will receive their awards at a banquet at the National Press Club in Washington on June 21.
