Restaurant was named by state as tax evader

Five months after it was publicly named on a list of tax scofflaws by state Comptroller Peter Franchot, Cactus Willie’s Buffet has closed.
Last week, visitors to the restaurant, which was located on Eastern Avenue across from Eastpoint Mall, were greeted with a note on the door stating that the buffet was closed as of Monday, June 16.

The note thanked the community for its business but added, “It’s time to close our doors.”
Cactus Willie’s and its owners, legally operating as Cactus Buffet Essex, Inc., were among the 25 businesses listed in January by Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot as among the state’s “Top 50 tax evaders.”
Cactus Willie’s was listed as owing $83,855.91 in unpaid taxes.
It is unclear if that tax situation was a factor in last week’s closing. No one answered the phone when The Eagle called the restaurant, and other attempts to contact the owners were unsuccessful.
With the closure of the Eastpoint location, the only Cactus Willie’s remaining is in Lancaster, Pa.
