“Talk” column receives Sigma Delta Chi award

Dundalk Eagle editor Steve Matrazzo joined a small but select group when he was named the winner of a Sigma Delta Chi award for column writing on Tuesday.
It is only the sixth time, according to available Sigma Delta Chi records, that the award has gone to a writer from a non-daily newspaper competing in a category against writers from daily publications.
“It’s nice when the spotlight finds its way to the little guy,” Matrazzo said.
The Sigma Delta Chi awards are presented annually for excellence in print, broadcast and online journalism by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), a 103-year-old professional organization with more than 9,000 members nationwide.
Matrazzo, who writes the “Talk of the Town” column for The Eagle, was the winner in the category of general column writing for newspapers with daily circulation of up to 100,000 and non-daily publications.
The category covers over 1,200 of the more than 1,300 daily newspapers in the United States, as well as all of the over 6,200 non-dailies.
“It’s a huge honor,” Matrazzo said. “It’s especially gratifying that a disinguished panel of journalists chose to give this kind of recognition to a community weekly.
“This award is a big thing to me personally, of course, but it’s also an important affirmation for The Eagle and for the many community newspapers that aspire to provide quality journalism to their readers.”
Five of Matrazzo’s “Talk of the Town” columns were submitted, ranging in topic from economic issues, criticizing government secrecy and defending facts in the face of falsehoods.
“We are thrilled for Steve,” said Deborah Cornely, publisher of The Eagle. “[We] are fortunate to have an editor of his caliber. His columns are always well-informed, well-reasoned and well-written.
“I learn a lot from them and enjoy reading them even when I disagree with his point of view.”
Matrazzo, a 1980 Dundalk High graduate who attended Washington and Lee University, began his career at The Eagle in 2006 and has been writing the “Talk of the Town” column since 2009. He succeeded Wayne Laufert as editor in 2010.
He has previously won awards from the National Newspaper Association, The Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Press Association and the Maryland Chapter of the SPJ.
He and the other Sigma Delta Chi honorees will receive their awards at a banquet at the National Press Club in Washington on June 21.
