The Maryland House of Delegates passed a bill on Friday that would raise gas taxes a total of 16 cents a gallon by 2016.
The bill passed by a vote of 78-56. It now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Maryland’s gas tax has been 23.5 cents per gallon for the past 21 years.
The new bill would raise the gas tax by four cents on July 1, with a series of further increases raising the total tax to 39.5 cents per gallon by 2016.
The three delegates from the 6th District, John Olszewski Jr. Joseph “Sonny” Minnick and Michael Weir Jr. all opposed the bill.
Sixth District Sen. Norman R. Stone is expected to oppose the bill in the Senate, where it reportedly has the support of Senate president Thomas V. Mike Miller.
