Del. Ric Metzgar (R-6)

ESSEX — Delegate Ric Metzgar opened the application period for his annual legislative scholarships for graduating high school seniors living in the sixth legislative district, which includes most of Essex and Dundalk.

Metzgar has $40,000 to award, and will look to award between 12 and 24 scholarships of typically up to $2,500, according to spokesperson Paul Blitz. Any graduating senior in the district is eligible to apply, so long as they plan to attend college or university in the state.

Applications can be obtained by emailing and must be postmarked by March 15.

Posted applications will be reviewed by a scholarship committee, which will take into consideration academics, extracurricular activities and community involvement, as well as whether the student would be the first in their family to attend college.

The scholarships are part of a series of annual legislative funds distributed to students across the state through delegates. Blitz confirmed that the distribution of funding would proceed as normal despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blitz said that the delegate is looking forward to supporting the education aspirations of deserving students.
