In response to an increase in COVID-19 cases and in test demand fueled by the new omicron variant, the Baltimore County Department of Health and Human Services has opened another testing site this week at White Marsh Mall.
“Cases have exploded across the county, state and the country because of the highly transmissible omicron variant,” department director Gregory Branch said, adding that the site is centrally located, easily accessible from encompassing areas, and joins three other county-run testing sites.
For some time, the health department has already adapted the space as a vaccination clinic, and now, it is also running a testing center at a lower level of the building. Branch said that he expects the testing site to have at least 40 employees, same as the county’s other test sites in Randallstown, Towson and Dundalk.
In the week before the new clinic opened, nearly 40% of people who tested at one of the county sites have revealed a positive result, Branch said.
For this reason among others, the county, starting this week, is requiring appointments at all of its testing locations.
“We want to make sure that when you come in for a test that you are not standing in line for hours spreading the virus to others,” Branch said. “We need to test people as soon as possible in an efficient and effective manner.”
During its opening day, the clinic performed tests for hundreds of people, and Branch said that he expects it to cover hundreds more throughout the week and weeks to come.
“Get vaccinated right away. Get boosted, when eligible. And if you are symptomatic, get tested immediately,” Branch said.
