Man wins $100,000 Amazon prize for getting vaccine

Idanny José Cuevas, a truck driver at Amazon in Sparrows Point, holds a sign showing his winnings from the company’s “Max Your Vax” contest. He plans on using the money to buy a house.

A truck driver for the Amazon location at Tradepoint Atlantic won big as part of a vaccination promotion at the company.

Idanny José Cuevas, who immigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic two years ago, won $100,000 in a sweepstakes for Amazon’s front-line employees, called “Max Your Vax,” according to a press release from the e-commerce giant, which said Cuevas has been working as a power industrial truck driver at Amazon’s Sparrows Point, Maryland fulfillment center for just two months.

“I chose to get vaccinated,” he said, “because I wanted to be part of ending the pandemic. It is not just for me, but for all of those around me.” Idanny plans to use his winnings to buy a new home for his family and help move his wife and children to the United States, and planned to stay at Amazon.

“We strongly believe that the best way to protect our front-line employees and communities from COVID-19 is through vaccination and we are proud to have hosted more than 1,500 on-site vaccination events to help make getting a vaccination as easy as possible for our employees and their household members,” Emily Hawkins, an Amazon spokesperson, said in the release.

Amazon is awarding about $2 million in prizes for employees who enter by submitting their vaccine card, including two $500,000 cash rewards, six $100,000 rewards, five new vehicles and five vacation packages. Employees upload a vaccine card and are entered into weekly drawings.

Earlier this month, Amazon announced it is hiring more than 5,000 in the Baltimore metro area. To learn more about employment opportunities, visit
