DUNDALK — Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash in Dundalk on Sunday evening.

Just before 8:24 pm on July 28, officials said that troopers from the Golden Ring Barrack were dispatched for a report of a motorcycle crash on the inner loop of I-695 between North Point and Merritt Boulevard.

John H. Schell, 61, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Schell was a graduate of Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts and lived in Sparrows Point.

MDOT State Highway Administration personnel responded to assist. Officials said that no lanes of traffic were closed as a result of this crash.

The Maryland State Police Crash Team responded to the scene and said they are continuing their investigation. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but officials said that the preliminary investigation indicated that Schell, the motorcyclist, lost control of his vehicle, a 1996 Harley, for unknown reasons. He traveled up an embankment and subsequently collided with a pole.

“The number of motorcyclists killed in crashes dropped to 5,172 in 2017, a 3 percent decrease, but motorcycle riders are still overrepresented in traffic fatalities,” states the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a division of the Department of Transportation.

The Dundalk Eagle‘s staff sends sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.
