Scholarship

Present during last month’s scholarship awards at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts were (from left) Ashley Reynolds, Whitney Dudley, Sarah Jones and Ashley Fassell.

Co-founded by Ashley Fassell ’03 and Ashley Reynolds ‘ 04, alumni of Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts, the “We’re Behind You Scholarship” was established as, the founders noted, “as a way to give back” to their alma mater.

Last year’s scholarship, the fund’s first, went to then-senior Satia Longe.

This year, the fund’s donors— made up of everyone from Patapsco alumni to people with no connection to the school — nearly doubled the total given in of 2017, allowing the co-founders to award two scholarships.

The awards were presented to graduating seniors Whitney Dudley and Sarah Jones on May 22 at the Patapsco Scholarship Awards Ceremony.

Dudley, who served as class president during her junior and senior year, will study Business Administration at Towson University this fall. A member of the school’s performance theatre magnet, she is active in her church and works at a summer camp run by the Salvation Army.

Sarah Jones, class valedictorian and a member of Patapsco’s performance theatre magnet, will attend Pace University in New York City. Jones performed in 20 productions during her time in high school, winning a variety of awards for her performances.

According to Fassell and Reynolds, winners of the scholarship award must demonstrate “integrity and exceptional character in and out of the classroom”, as well as a “commitment to leaving a lasting impact on her school and community.”

Considered in the scholarship are academic performance, leadership as well as community service.

For their part, both Reynolds and Fassell praised this year’s scholarship awardees.

“Whitney and Sarah have both demonstrated exceptional leadership ability during their time at Patapsco,” Reynolds said, noting, “They are both very deserving of the ‘We’re Behind You Scholarship’ and we look forward to hearing about their success in college and beyond.”

Fassell echoed this sentiment, noting, “Whitney and Sarah are examples of young people who value hard work and compassion for others.”

She added, “ I wish them continued success in college and hope they can join us next year when we award the scholarship to more PHS students! “

With this year’s scholarship awarded, Fassell, Reynolds and their donors are already looking to the task of raising funds for next year’s awards.
