Local rec teams won big in the Eastern Area Soccer League’s annual “Boo Bash” tournament, with the Colgate and Edgemere-Sparrows Point rec leagues making it to six finals and winning four of them.

The championship winning 14-and-under Colgate Lions soccer team headed by Michelle Hagan and assistant coach Eleanor Wood thought they were up for a challenge when they switched from Bear Creek to the Colgate rec league and decided to compete in Region 3’s EASL rather than Region 4 this year.

“The teams are actually a little harder up there,” Hagan said.

After beating Edgemere-Sparrows Point 6-0 in the quarterfinals on Friday, Nov. 5, Hagan’s team came up against the first-seed Bengies-Chase team which had been undefeated throughout the regular season. Hagan’s team had went 4-7 during the regular season.

But Hagan’s Lions shut out Bengies-Chase in a 1-0 victory in the semi-finals, and went on to take the trophy back to Dundalk after beating Overlea 2-0 in the finals.

Colgate’s 12-and-under soccer team headed by coach Joe Bruno also brought home the championship title, beating Gray Charles in the Boo Bash tournament’s quarterfinals, then beating Colgate’s other team in semifinals and taking the victory in finals, winning against Overlea.

That was after a 2-6 regular season.

“We all came together when it mattered,” Bruno said.

Edgemere-Sparrows Point’s under-8 “green” team (Mackin) beat the rec council’s other team (Moneymaker) in finals. ESP’s under-10 team (Donnelly) also won their championships. The council’s under-8 “black” team as well as their under-12 girls team made it to finals in the tournament, but did not win.
