To the Editor,

I am very concerned about Baltimore County Executive John Olszewski’s plan to introduce the HOME ACT (Housing Opportunities Made Equal). This legislation would prohibit housing discrimination based on the source of their income.

I do not agree with this legislation. We have been pushing hard to revitalize our district. We are working to identify the slum lords in our area and hold them accountable. Our area has already been hit hard with an abundance of housing vouchers.

There are many situations when a renter is not qualified to live in that property and now they will be able to claim discrimination. Discrimination lawsuits are very costly and are not covered by most insurance companies.

Another factor is that property owners would be forced to take HOME ACT applicants out of the fear of a possible lawsuit. That could result in discrimination against a renter who does not rely on housing vouchers from obtaining a rental property.

This bill was introduced on the state level and I voted against this bill. I urge all members of the Baltimore County Council to vote AGAINST this bill.

The bottom line is that this legislation is infringing on property owners’ property rights.
