We have been fighting to make sure the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) stays in compliance with the existing wastewater discharge permit issued by MDE (Maryland Department of the Environment).
It is important for our wastewater treatment plant to comply with regulations and serve all constituents effectively. I wrote last month that I am cautiously optimistic of the Baltimore Regional Water Governance Task Force (HB 843), but I want to see more representation from Baltimore County.
I introduced an amendment to the task force requesting two additional members for Baltimore County to achieve equal representation with Baltimore City. The amendment failed 39 to 95. Coincidentally, the explosion occurred just before my amendment was defeated.
I was visibly shaken when I presented the amendment, and I notified the members of the House of Delegates about the explosion at the Back River WWTP. The explosion showed that we need to do more there, but that was not enough to get the amendment passed.
I reluctantly voted for the task force bill. I am concerned about the current distribution of the task force members, which I feel doesn’t represent the interests of Baltimore County adequately.
I believe we must ensure the plant remains up to code, which we can achieve with proper representation.
