Missed opportunities and some puzzling officiating saw the Sparrows Point field hockey team fall to North East 2-1 on Friday in the Class 1A state quarterfinals.
The Indians scored the winning goal with about three minutes remaining while the Pointers were a player down for reasons still not clear.
“I am not sure why we were given two cards,” Sparrows Point coach Corin Gwin said. “Yet we had a player come off the field gushing blood from a high stick, but no call on that one.
“It was a close game, and we definitely could have won.”
Pointer players said one of their players was given a card and sent off the field for five minutes (no substitution allowed). It was during that time North East scored the winning goal off of a penalty corner.
Sparrows Point players also admitted they had several chances to score, but didn’t cash in.
“We had problems scoring on corners,” Gwin said. “Their flyer was super fast. But it was a good season and I’m proud of my girls.”
Sparrows Point ended the season with an 8-6 record.
North East (13-2), seeded second in the state quarterfinals, will play sixth-seeded Washington in the semifinals.
Sparrows Point reached the state quarterfinals by defeating host Carver A&T in the Class 1A South Region I title game on Oct. 30.
