Sparrows Point saw its regular-season dual match winning streak halted at 86 last season by Owings Mills.

The Pointers looked primed to start a new one after opening the season with 12 straight wins.

Eight of those wins came during the Scorpion Duals tournament at Oakland Mills. Sparrows Point also beat Kenwood to start the season, 52-30; swept a tri-match on Dec. 10 by beating Lansdowne and Overlea both by 72-12; and beat visiting Pikesville on Thursday 58-21.

And the Pointers are missing three starters out with injuries.

“This is one of my better teams,” Pointer coach Mike Whisner said. “It’s comparable to my 2016-17 team. We can compete with anyone, if we can stay healthy.”

(The 2016-17 team won the county and regional tournament championships and finished third in the state tournament. It was the first of three straight dual-meet regional champs that reached the dual-meet state finals.)

Moving up to Class 2A means the Pointers have to contend with Hereford and Owings Mills in the regional duals tournament, although if they get past the Bulls and Golden Eagles, defending champ Damascus has moved up to Class 3A.

“It will be a challenge,” Whisner said. “If we get past the regional tournament, Stephen Decatur [a school, not a person] will be a beast. Glenelg will also be a test.”

Sparrows has six wrestlers in the state rankings: Dominic Ambrosino, 16th, 106 pounds; Wayne Brooks, 23rd, 126 pounds; Richard Davis, 9th, 132 pounds; Matt Fouts, 14th, 138 pounds; Jake Rallo, 11th, 170 pounds; and Lexx Carr, 6th, 195 pounds.

(These are the overall rankings, including all four classifications, plus private school wrestlers.)

The tri-match against Lansdowne and Overlea not only featured identical scores, but only two weight classes reached the second period in both matches. Every match was also determined by a pin or forfeit.

Against Lansdowne, Sparrows Point received first-round pins from Kendrick Emani (152 pounds), Jake Lure (160), Michael Brower (170), Jacob Siegel (195), Shawn Woolford (285), Ambrosino (106), Taylor Maynor (113), Nathan Jacoby (126), Davis (138) and Luke Hoenig (145).

Rallo (180) and Davis had to work into the second period before getting their pins.

Against Overlea, the first-period pins came from Hoenig (145), Emani (152), Jacoby ( 120), and Adam Rode (132).

Wolford (285) and Zack Barnickel (220) had second-period pins. Overlea forfeited four weight classes.

In sweeping the Scorpion Duals, Sparrows Point defeated Severna Park, 58-19; LaPlata 44-27; Montgomery Blair 42-34; Calvert 72-12; Flowers 78-6; Atholton 65-15; North Point 66-18 and Oakland Mills 57-19.

In the Montgomery Blair match, Sparrows Point led 36-34 entering the last match; Jacoby nailed down the win with a pin at 120 pounds.

The Pointers trailed LaPlata 27-11 after eight matches; Sparrows Point swept the last six matches ( five by pin) and rallied for the win.

Sparrows Point was to wrestle at Hereford on Tuesday and at Eastern Tech on Thursday.

Patapsco (0-3) was to host Towson on Tuesday and wrestle Franklin and Dulaney on the road Thursday.

Dundalk (1-1) lost to Catonsville 66-15on Dec. 10. The Owls were to host Kenwood on Tuesday and Carver A&T on Thursday.
