Nothing lasts forever.

Look, we all knew the Sparrows Point girls soccer team would eventually not win a state title. It’s the how it happened that was a bit shocking.

After six consecutive Class 1A state championships, Sparrows Point moved up to Class 2A for 2019. Instead of just Smithsburg and Patterson Mill, there would be several other worth state contenders.

Macy Gerbes won four track regional titles and two state titles in indoor track and track and field.

But the Pointers never had the chance to test themselves against the likes of Century, Middletown, Calvert or Rising Sun. They were stunned in the regional round by a nearby school the Pointers had dominated for years: Eastern Tech.

But was that the story of 2019 for local athletics? Oh, heck no. There was this senior at Sparrows Point High named Mya King ...

January

Dundalk debuts a new wrestling invitational: The King of the Mat tournament. The event featured 19 teams, and was marred somewhat by an ominous weather forecast that caused four schools to not return for the tournament’s second day. Indian River of Delaware won the title, with the Owls finishing fifth.

Michael Johnson became the sixth Dundalk basketball player to reach 1,000 career points.

Michael Fouts set the Sparrows Point record for career wins in wrestling with 137 (he added more before the end of the season).

* * *

Dundalk High retired the basketball jersey of 2011 graduate Tracey Carrington during an emotional ceremony in the school gymnasium. Tracey was slain in September 2018. The case remains unresolved.

The Dundalk girls basketball team defeated Owings Mills to end a 16-game losing streak.

During the Baltimore County Indoor Track championships, Mya King of Sparrows Point gets her year off to a good start by winning the 55-meter hurdles title.

February

The Sparrows Point wrestling team had won 86 straight regular-season dual matches. The Pointers highlighted this streak on Senior Night with a pre-match ceremony. Owings Mills then proceeded to end the streak.

The Pointer wrestlers quickly put the end of their streak behind their collective selves and won their third straight Class 1A North Region Duals title. Sparrows Point then reached the state duals championship match for the third year in a row, only to again lose to the mountain boys from out west (this time, Southern of Garrett County).

The nevitable day finally arrived: Sparrow Point lost in the girls soccer playoffs for the first time since 2012.

Yeah, it’s been a quiet year thus far for Patapsco, but that changed when Erin Palmer won the 55-meter hurdles title at the Class 3A Central Region indoor track championships.

Malik Brown of Dundalk won the pole vault title at the 3A Central Region championships.

Seeking its third consecutive Baltimore County wrestling title, Sparrows Point comes up three points short as Owings Mills overcomes a 24-point deficit in the championship round. Both teams had six wrestlers in the finals; the Golden Eagles went 6-0 while the Pointers went 1-5.

Television cameras come to Sparrows Point’s gymnasium to watch a boys basketball game between the Pointers and Chesapeake. The Bayhawks win 69-37, but six points are scored by Pointer team manager Colin Stevens, who enters the game in the fourth quarter and sinks his first shot.

At the Baltimore County Indoor Track championships, Mya King of Sparrows Point wins the county title in the 55-meter hurdles, takes third in the 300-meter dash and fourth in the 55-meter dash.

All Mya King did in 2019 was win three state titles, all in state-record times, and win multiple county and regional titles. She graduated as a three-time Dundalk Eagle Athlete of the Season.

Mya’s teammate, Macy Gerbes, wins the Class 1A state 3,200-meter title for the second year in a row. Gerbes is a sophomore.

The week before the indoor track state championship meet, the Sparrows Point girls won the Class 1A Central Region title, believed to be the first track region team title won by a Sparrows Point girls team.

King won the 55-hurdles regional title, while Gerbes won the 1,600-meter regional crown, yet took second in the 3,200 meters.

Danny Davis and Lexx Carr win individual titles for the Sparrows Point wrestling team at the Class 1A/2A North Regional tournament.

March

On the next-to-last day of the month, Mya King wins the 100 and 300 hurdles, and the long and triple jumps, at the Baltimore County Class 1A/2A Track and Field Opener. King’s times/distances would also have won all four events at the 3A/4A meet.

April

The Dundalk softball team trailed visiting Parkville by three runs in the bottom of the seventh, two outs, and the bases loaded. Alexia Fouts belted the first pitch to deep right-center for a walk-off grand slam.

Team Mosmiller wins the 38th Annual Scoop Oelke Golf Tournament at Rocky Point.

Mya King — heard of her? — wins the 100 and 300 meter hurdles titles, and the long junp, at the Baltimore County Track and Field championships. In the 100 hurdles final, she edges Patapsco’s Erin Palmer by a hair at the finish line. That is not an exaggeration.

The Dundalk boys track team has three county champions: Thomas Hamby (discus), Taishaun Cradoock (300 hurdles) and the 400 relay team of Craddock, Malik Brown, Dallion Smith and Adam Lmansour.

After a winless season in 2018, the Patapsco girls larosse team wins seven games and the Baltimore County Division III crown.

The Sparrows Point boys lacrosse team reached the satte championship game for the first time, where it loses to Patterson Mill.

The Dundalk boys team win the Class 3A North regional title, the first for the Owls since 1990. Taishaun Craddock takes home four individual titles: 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 400 relay and 800 relay. K.J. Welch won the pole vault, Adam Lamansour won the 200 dash and was part of the 400 and 800 relays; and Thomas Hamby won the discus.

Patapsco’s Erin Palmer, in a season of frustration (more later), wins Class 3A North region titles in the 100 hurdles and 200 dash.

The Sparrows Point girls track team wins the Class 1A North Regional title, powered by Macy Gerbes winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meter crowns; and that Mya King kid winning the 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the triple jump, while finishing second in the long jump. And this still isn’t her best day in 2019.

Sparrows Point wins its first regional team title in tennis. Brady Bryant and Ariana Serevetas win mixed doubles; Bryant and Nathan Wynne take boys doubles; and Alana Levy and Sammie Bennett win girls doubles.

On the last day of the spring sports season, the Sparrows Point ...

...tennis team won the Class 1A state title, the first state tennis title in school history;

... softball team, which entered the postseason with a 6-10 record, wn the Class 1A North Region title, defeated Lackey in the state semifinals 5-4, and reached the state championship game, where the Pointers fell to Bohemis Manor and an Auburn-bound pitcher, 8-0;

... senior Mya King capped a track season that has not been seen in these parts since the days of Rachel Clary, winning the Class 1A 100 and 300 hurdles state titles in state-record times. Macy Gerbes won the 1,600 meters state crown.

It bears mentioning: King competed the entire season with the memory of how, in the state championships the previous year, she tripped and fell while on the verge of winning the 100 and 300 hurdles.

June

The 2018 soccer season was long past and Sparrows Point standout was already at West Virginia University, but this month she was named to the USA Today All-USA second team for girls soccer.

Eight local pool teams — eight of them from The New Green Room — advanced to the American Poolplayers Association World Championships in Las Vegas.

July

This was a slow month.

August

The Cubs, managed by Dave Cundiff, upset the Astros, managed by Jim Cundiff, in the championship game of the Eastern Baltimore County Over-40 baseball League. Dave is then grounded for taunting Jim.

September

Considering its the opening month of the fall season, not much happened. Patapsco football did start 3-0 for the first time in over 20 years.

October

Jaelyn Jackson, a Dundalk freshman, wins the Baltimore County Novice Girls Golf Tournament.

The Patapsco football teams cores against Dundalk for the first time since 2014. The Owls still post their 11th straight win over the Patriots.

November

The Sparrows Point field hockey team wins a regional title, the second in school history. The Pointers fell in the state quarterfinal.

Trailing by a goal against Towson with under 10 minutes remaining in the Baltimore County Championship game, Abby Meadows scores on a free kick from 45 yards out, and Sparrows Point goes on to win in penalty kicks, 4-2, for the Pointers’ fifth county title in six years.

Against Eastern Tech in the regional final, the Pointer girls soccer team couldn’t find that tying goal in the closing minutes. Sparrows Point girls soccer loses a postseason game for the first time since 2012, falling to Eastern Tech in the regional final, 1-0. It’s an own goal.

Rhianna Stitt of Sparrows Point wins the Baltimore County girls golf championship for the fourth year in a row. Stitt takes fourth in the state tournament.

* * *

The Dundalk football team reaches the second round of the regional playoffs for the second year in a row, a program first. But the Owls are again eliminated by Franklin.

December

The Sparrows Point boys basketball team starts the season 3-1; that’s as many wins as the Pointers had in the three previous seasons combined.
